President Donald J. Trump announced that the U.S. Navy intends to develop a new class of large surface combatants, referred to as battleships, designed to address modern maritime conflict. The announcement was made at the Mar‑a‑Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida, with senior defense and naval officials in attendance.
The new Trump‑class ships are expected to displace between 30,000 and 40,000 tons and are currently in the design phase, with construction of the first vessel, the USS Defiant, targeted for the early 2030s. Navy leadership described these vessels as significant additions to what has been termed a “Golden Fleet” of advanced warships.
Senior officials highlighted that these battleships would be built entirely in the U.S. and are intended to strengthen maritime capabilities. The plan envisions eventually constructing a fleet of 20 to 25 such vessels. The announcement followed the Navy’s recent decisions on other shipbuilding programs, including plans for new frigates.
Displacement (Planned): 30,000–40,000 tons
